Guidance Curriculum

The purpose of guidance curriculum is to provide all students with knowledge of personal, social, academic, and career development, to promote their positive mental health, and to assist them in acquiring and using life skills and may be accomplished through:

  • Structured groups
  • Classroom presentations

Individual Planning

Individual planning consists of counselor-planned and directed activities that help all students explore, plan, monitor, and manage their own learning, as well as their personal, academic, and career development.

Activities include:

  • Individual appraisal
  • Individual advisement
  • Individual assessment and utilization of test scores and data
  • Individual placement, course selection, help with transitions, and follow-up

Responsive Services

Responsive services consist of activities to meet the immediate needs and concerns of students, whether these needs or concerns require counseling, consultation, referral, or information. Responsive services are delivered through:

  • Individual counseling
  • Small-group counseling
  • Crisis counseling
  • Consultation with parents, teachers, other educators, and community agencies
  • Referral to sources including mental health agencies, employment and training programs, vocational rehabilitation, juvenile services, and social services

System Support

System support consists of management activities that establish, maintain, and enhance the total guidance program through:

  • Professional development
  • Staff and community relations
  • Consultation with teachers and other staff members
  • Advisory councils
  • Community outreach
  • Program management and operations
  • Research, development, and accountability
